A fence between Egypt and Israel, it was built in order to stop the flow of Africans entering into Israel. The Construction of the 245 kilometers border fence between Israel and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula was completed after three and a half years. The government used African workers to construct the fence.

By some estimates, 60,000 African asylum-seekers — mainly from Sudan and Eritrea — reside in Israel. For these men, women and children, the journey to the country is perilous: traversing hostile countries, often encountering bandits and facing the Egyptian and Sinai deserts before they even reach the border. Many who start the journey don’t make it. For those who do, they face a kind of purgatory rather than a home.

Caught migrants face squalor and death in Libya

In an isolated Libyan compound, a black iron door creaks open, revealing gloom and human misery. Inside are nearly 400 migrants in filthy conditions. There is barely room to sit, never mind sleep. The men are sick, most sit passively on the floor. Some have moved into the building’s metal rafters. They come from most of the countries in Africa; Niger, Eritrea, Gambia and Egypt to name a few.

“We were Slaves” – ASSAF Passover campaign of the torture victims from Sinai. Designed by: Anat Michaelis, Betzalel Academy, Visual Communications department

Since 2009, many reports have been delivered regarding the kidnapping and forced captivity of asylum seekers by Bedouin smugglers in Sinai, Egypt. This captivity includes brutal physical and sexual violence in several forms, including the systematic rape of men and women. The brutalities faced by the asylum seekers are attempts by the Bedouins to put pressure on the captive’s friends and family to pay ransom for their survival and release. There are reports about captives unable to attain the ransom who were killed, while others have died due to the violence itself.

Trafficking and Torturing Eritrean Refugees

eritrean-refugeesInternationally ignored, life in Eritrea is brutal and shrouded in secrecy. The world is indifferent. The regime trusts nobody – even the UN’s special rapporteur on Eritrea, Sheila Keetharuth, has been denied a visa. Last year she stated: “basic tenets of the rule of law are not respected.” Following this, the Council “strongly condemned” Eritrea’s “continued widespread and systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms.” [Human Rights Watch (HRW)]Violations include forced and child labor, “arbitrary detention, and severe restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and religion,” also violence against women, gender inequality, gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and economic discrimination.
